Week 12 - Cold, booo!

This week I managed to be sick with a cold. All week. Why can't the flu and H1N1 shots I got prevent colds too? Yeah, I know why, but one can dream. Not much to say other than I was sick and I couldn't take my usual Day/Nyquil. Tylenol cold doesn't work half as well. :( Christmas came and went. The next week will be spent in LA and SD.

I thought that week 12 meant the end of the first trimester, being 3 months and all. No such luck, apparently the second trimester doesn't start until week 14 - the actual 3 month mark of being pregnant (minus the two weeks they usually count before conception). What a letdown.

The little one is growing like a weed, and is apparently the size of a large plum this week! My lower stomach area definitely sticks out a little more, and feels hard when I'm standing up.

Week 10 - First Baby Appt!

Finally! We get our first real doctor appointment! Well, ok, so we saw the midwife. Apparently at PAMF, you switch back and forth from midwife and OB, and our first appt was with the midwife on Tuesday. Igor came. :)

We got to ask any questions we had, and they gave me the H1N1 flu shot. My 2nd favorite part of the appointment was seeing the look on Igor's face when he saw a speculum, and where it was going. He's such a trooper. :)

The bad news: they wouldn't do a sonogram. :( HOWEVER, we heard the heartbeat!! The little dude or dudette had a heartbeat of 170 BPM. Normal for a little one of this age, but still very fast sounding to us! Kaplow kaplow kaplow! :) It was awesome, and it made all the nasty symptoms all worthwhile.

Our next appointment is on January 4, 2010 with our newly chosen OB. I'm hoping they do an ultrasound at that point. I know it'll be too early to determine sex, but really, who doesn't want to see the little life who's making mom's life kind of miserable at the moment? :)

The morning sickness hasn't been too terrible this week, which I think can be attributed to less stress at work. I even had (and ENJOYED) a salad at a work holiday function this week. The one thing I have been having issues with (sorry if TMI) is going to the bathroom. Constipation is such a pain in the butt. Literally. I still can't even think about Fiber One. A coworker suggested Metamucil... ewwwwwwww.

My uterus is now apparently the size of a grapefruit this week and the little one's the size of a prune! I love these fruit references. :) Although I'm not showing too much, I definitely have started to need the next size up in pants. Haven't gained all that much weight yet. Maybe a couple pounds.

Week 8 aka Turkey week

Turkey day in a nutshell: OK, cooking smells were bad, eating was not as horrible as initially anticipated. As bad as the food I'm eating is, I can't eat very much of it. Which can be annoying. If I want to eat that entire brownie, dangit, I want to EAT IT ALL.

You know, I really have been trying to take prenatal vitamins, but it's not working out so well. On Tuesday this week I brought a pre-cut dish of fruit from Safeway to eat in the morning (healthy! Impressive!). So after eating a good amount of that, I took my vitamins. I'm good. About 30 minutes later I cannot make it all the way to the bathroom in time to spew the delicious and nutritious cantaloupe, honeydew, watermelon, etc. I felt so proud of consuming. No warning. What the heck? Well, I have a new respect for the trash can half way to the bathroom. What's it doing there? Saving me.

Once I'm done with that, I feel a bit better, so I go back to work. I'm hoping to God it was the vitamins, and not the beginning of a morning work ritual. An hour later, I manage to make it all the way to the bathroom before spewing the less than appetizing bile in my stomach. At least the fruit had kind of a pretty color. I start getting more worried that this could be another symptom of "morning" sickness, and not just the vitamins. I feel horrible afterwards and go home. I situate myself with a clear path to the bathroom, but fortunately I don't spew again.

On the bright side, I have found a way to spend the time that I used to go to Jazzercise. Zelda. Yes, I found the old N64, successfully plugged it into the TV, found the right TV setting for it to actually show the video game, and started playing Zelda, the Ocarina of Time. It's great! It helps to keep my mind off other things, like how I should be doing something productive, or what food I am able to eat, or the emails piling up in my inbox because I want nothing to do with anyone at this point. I blame it (and everything else) on the hormones.

We've grown to the size of a large raspberry this week, and looking a little less alienish. Maybe it's a good thing we aren't getting the ultrasound this early.

Week 7 (or is it week 5?)

How is it that we are able to say I'm at week 7, when there was a full two weeks where I wasn't even pregnant included? Is it supposed to make us feel better? Sure, I guess 7 weeks sounds so much closer to 40 than 5 weeks, but really - who are we kidding? Well, not Igor, that's for sure. He's not willing to give me my extra two weeks. I can't help it, every website I visit tells me I'm at 7 weeks!

And really, must he make dinner past 8pm every night including cooking onions? And eggs? Really? OMG, those are possibly the worst smells ever. Thank God for rooms across the house with doors to keep it out. What the heck am I supposed to eat? Thinking of food makes my stomach turn. Thinking of Thanksgiving next week is... not something I try to do very often.

On the bright side, the pregnancy card ALWAYS works. "Yeah, I don't think I'm going to be able to be in the kitchen to make anything for Thanksgiving this year." Oh darn. Thinking about the smells that will waft into every nook and cranny in the place is enough to book a ticket to someplace where they don't celebrate Thanksgiving. The only problem with that is, I am no longer able to take anxiety medication for plane trips. Hm.

I found a new acceptable food this week. Stouffer's Lasagna. Ooooooooh Stouffer's, where have you been the past 7 or 5 weeks? Not low fat by any means, but aren't I supposed to gain weight while pregnant? It's heaven. I've eaten it every night this week. After work I'm usually too tired to do anything, but if there is no lasagna in the house, I will get off my butt to go get some at Target. I'm even willing to wait the 13-100 minutes (depending on size of package) it takes to nuke it before eating. And for me, that's dedication. Hm when was the last time I went to Jazzercise?

This week, the little one is about the size of a blueberry and apparently has a HUGE head. You'd think it was growing in my boobs at the rate they're growing. I just got them to shrink down when losing the weight, and now I'm thinking I shouldn't have gotten rid of those bras. Booo!

Week 6 - How do they count these weeks?

For some reason, I didn't start with the "morning" sickness, food aversions, etc. until right after I found out I was pregnant. It seemed to hit like, the day after. Makes me wonder if it's all in my head. :)

I am tired. All the time. I take naps in my office during lunch at work. This week was rather stressful at work, which I think makes the sickness worse. I have yet to find food that makes me feel OK to eat.

I can't even think of eating the stuff I used to eat. Salads? No thanks. Soup? Egh... Fiber One cereal or bars? I couldn't get through either. Now Tortilla chips with refried beans, sour cream, chicken, perhaps a shred of lettuce - BRING IT ON this week (and I did). Yesterday I wanted apple pie a la mode. Today I ordered take out clam chowder in a bread bowl from Red Lobster.

I've found that I need to smell something to see if I want it. Example: We had some sort of fire/earthquake drill at work earlier this week in the morning (about 10am). Someone walking in front of me outside was eating pasta with red sauce (yeah, in the morning), and it was all I could do to shove everyone out of the way to get back in the building, get some money, head to the student union and get some pasta with red sauce... yum. I did well, I managed to wait until we were let back inside, and then head over and get what I wanted.

Other cravings this week include fruit by the foot, gushers, and brownies (thank heaven for 7-11). :) I'm having trouble finding drinks that I want. Water tastes metallicky... and everything I do drink needs to have ice. I've been drinking iced/watered-down caffeine free diet coke (weird, I don't usually drink soda). I guess that's one way to confirm the baby takes after Igor already!

The little one is the size of a sweet pea, about a quarter of an inch. It apparently looks like... well, a little alien. Not quite a pretty sight yet.

Say goodbye to all that stuff I never did anyway...

Well that pre-conception appointment turned out to be my first prenatal appointment. Two months of trying was all it took. Yay! Having had irregular menstruation (thanks stress!) for the last 10 or so years, I didn't think anything of not starting by day 30 of the cycle. By day 35 (11/2/09, today?), though, I decided after work to go buy a stick and pee on it (that's the technical terminology, clearly).

None of that +/- BS for me. No I went straight for the technology and got the two pack of the sticks that give you a digital screen with "pregnant" or "not pregnant". Awesome. Well, I'll give you a hint - two days of testing could not yield the word "not" on the screen. More awesome.

I couldn't hold it in. I guess some people like to wait for the second trimester or whatever, but I was ecstatic. Forget that. I told everyone. OK, a lot of people. Pretty much anyone I see outside Facebook. I even followed Igor's wishes, and that night made him dinner and told him the good news over a mouthful of food. :)

Oh the magical ultrasound wand!

Boy, it's been all of two minutes-ish since my last post!

OK, on to pre-conception, etc. etc.

We kind of started trying (or started the lack of trying NOT ) to get pregnant after the honeymoon. My goal was to have kids at 27 and 30, and Igor was ok with that. :) I knew I couldn't handle pregnancy during all the wedding planning craze, so after my birthday seemed the logical choice. Well, it didn't happen the first month. I was cool with that. My thought was, we'll see what happens the first month, and if it doesn't, well, I'll read up on it.

In comes "What to Expect Before You're Expecting". I read up on all about tracking BBTs, cervical mucus, ovulation, pre-conception health, etc. etc. and I tried my best to do all that jazz for the next couple weeks. I even visited the dentist (and got Igor to as well!), and went for a pre-conception appointment (10/13/09, er... today?). During this appointment, I was intimately acquainted with the ultrasound wand, and for the first time got to see my lady parts from the inside. Anyway, the doc said I looked good and there was no reason I should have any problems becoming pregnant. He told me, to my surprise, that I had recently ovulated within the past couple days.

Stay tuned...

The beginning.

Today is Monday, December 14th, 2009. I've been meaning to start a blog for the past month or so, just to keep track of this crazy thing called pregnancy. Apparently you tend to forget all the pre-baby stuff, and if I'm going to go through this again, it might be nice to have something to compare it to.

I suppose I should recap the previous part of the first trimester before I forget it all.... bear with me!

Because I can be sneaky and change the post date, we'll say this post is from mid September and move on from there.... :)
